COSONDRA SJOSTRÖM
Cosondra Sjostrom is a contemporary abstract painter known for her development of Abstract Portraiture and Existential Abstraction, practices that translate individual human presence into non-representational form. Working through conversation, memory, and emotional inquiry, she constructs paintings that function as psychological records rather than depictions of likeness.
In 2020, Sjostrom introduced her defining visual motif: a monolithic rectangular form that serves as both structure and threshold. Rather than representing the figure, the rectangle operates as a container for lived experience, anchoring the painting while allowing emotional and psychological forces to extend beyond its boundaries. From within and around this form, layers of color emerge as traces of memory, intensity, and transformation.
Her process is built through accumulation and excavation. Dense impasto is layered, scraped, and reworked, allowing earlier strata to remain partially visible beneath the surface. This creates a visual field where time, memory, and emotion coexist within a single structure, rather than resolving into a fixed image.
Sjostrom’s work extends abstraction into the realm of human identity, positioning painting as a space where psychological presence becomes visible through material form. Her practice has evolved into a distinctive voice within contemporary abstraction, recognized for its integration of formal rigor, emotional depth, and conceptual clarity.
Alongside her painting with the portrait series, Sjostrom has developed a parallel conceptual and literary exploration of relational connection through projects such as Creepy Romance and the forthcoming Quantum Entangled Hearts. These works examine love, memory, and human connection as enduring forms of relational energy, extending her artistic inquiry beyond the canvas into narrative and speculative form.
Across all mediums, Sjostrom’s work is unified by a sustained focus on human connection, how individual experience, emotional presence, and relational bonds persist, transform, and resonate across time.
