Cosondra Sjostrom is a contemporary abstract painter who developed Existential Abstraction, a movement that transforms unseen psychological presence into non-representational material form through her core methodology of Psychological Abstraction.
Her practice unfolds across two avenues: personal excavations of her own emotional turning points (Artist Portraits), and bespoke works created through confidential dialogue with collectors (Collector Legacy Portraits). Both translate lived experience into an enduring chromatic record across three distinct phases:
1. Emotional Inquiry & Color Logic
Every painting begins with deep listening, whether exploring internal memory or analyzing the emotional cadence of a dialogue. Sjostrom maps these psychological currents into a precise color logic, where palette selection, value contrast, and color temperature are assigned based directly on the emotional energy of the moment rather than decorative theory.
2. Layered Construction & Structure
Painting develops on canvas through dense acrylic impasto, building tactile weight and physical presence. At the center of each work is her signature monolithic rectangular silhouette, acting as a structural anchor and a container for identity and memory.
3. Excavation & Breaking the Boundary
Through subtractive scraping and excavation, buried colors resurface in luminous strata. Sjostrom deliberately drives the thick impasto past the edges of the central rectangle, using the scraped, broken borders to symbolize liberation from rigid form itself.
